## Short answer

A Rhode Island paycheck has federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare withheld, plus Rhode Island's graduated income tax. Employees also pay Temporary Disability Insurance, which funds both disability and caregiver benefits; the employee rate is 1.1% of wages for 2026, up to an annual wage cap. Rhode Island has no local income taxes.

## State income tax

Rhode Island uses a graduated income tax with a small number of brackets, and the bracket amounts are adjusted for inflation each year. The Division of Taxation publishes updated withholding tables, and employees use Form RI W-4 to claim their state withholding allowances. Because Rhode Island's lowest rate already applies from the first taxable dollar, most employees see state tax on every regular paycheck.

## Other state payroll deductions

Rhode Island was the first state to create a temporary disability program, and it is still paid for entirely by workers.

- **Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI).** The Department of Labor and Training set the employee contribution at **1.1%** for 2026. It is withheld up to an annual taxable wage limit, so very high earners stop paying it partway through the year.
- **Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI).** Paid caregiver leave is funded through the same TDI contribution, so it does not appear as a separate deduction.

Unemployment insurance in Rhode Island is paid by employers, not employees, so it should not appear as a deduction.

## Local taxes

Rhode Island cities and towns do not levy income taxes, so where an employee lives or works in the state does not change their withholding.

## Federal withholding still applies

- Federal income tax based on the employee's Form W-4.
- Social Security at 6.2%, up to the annual Social Security wage base.
- Medicare at 1.45%, plus 0.9% additional Medicare once wages pass $200,000.

## Creating a Rhode Island pay stub with PayStubNest

Go to [/app/new](https://www.paystubnest.com/app/new), enter hours or a salary, and select Rhode Island. The exact figures on each stub depend on the employee's pay, pay frequency, W-4 choices, deductions and year-to-date totals, and PayStubNest calculates all of it automatically: federal and state withholding, TDI, and the year-to-date totals that tell you when an employee has reached the TDI wage limit. ## Record-keeping tip

Label the TDI line clearly on every stub. Employees who later file a disability or caregiver claim often want to confirm they were contributing, and a clean year-to-date TDI total answers that quickly.
